Antivirus for Linux?
 

I have just installed RedHat Linux 8.0 as a dual-boot with Win2K Pro in the other partition... enjoying my Linux experience so far! :D

Under Win2K I run a firewall and antivirus software. No need for the firewall under RedHat but I am wondering about antivirus software... is it necessary? ...and if so what is a good antivirus program that will work with RedHat Linux 8.0?

Surely you mean the other way round, there is not so much a need for antivirus software but there is for a decent firewall. You can get antivirus software for linux but due to linux file structure it is harder for virus's to affect a machine running linux. A good firewall is however needed, you could always configure Ipchains in RH8. However, if you have a number of mates who are running windows and you receive an infected email which you forward to them they are not going to thank you for it if it ruins their system.

Guard Dog is a nice easy free configurable firewall. And I've just read on a different post that F-Prot is free.....

I use clamscan -it's nice and fast.

There's also F-Prot for Linux ... it's not GPL'ed but
free for non-commercial use :)

Comes with a shell-script (put that in a cron
job!) to get new virus-definitions...

shorewall is a nice firewall for linux.

rav antivirus for linux works. it's used for mailservers mostly. it's proprietary, haven't checked the price lately. bought mine for $30 and you can update as much as you want. they do have a trial edition, full edition that has a 30 day trial.

You will probably only need a virus scanner if you are serving Windows boxes with it.

I use f-prot on my linux box not realy for my protection but you can scan the windows boxs on your network. One problem I have with windows virus scan solutions is that your trying to scan a possably infected box from a possably infected box so some virus hide themselves. Recently someone sent my G/F 57 viruses lmao She has Norton 2002 and it was updated but a lot of them got thru. Norton was just overwelmed! I was able to clean up her windows box easy with f-prot.

shorewall - HELP!
 

Hi,
Please, help! I am puzzled with configuring of shorwall.
I do not have a server (yet). My Linux is a mere workstation.
I need a firewall because I connect to the Internet to maintain my big website and check e-mail.
However if I leave the shorewall enabled, I can not connect anywhere.
What to do?

A quick search would have solved this.
Shorewall does not work out of the box, but is not hard to setup the rules.

Just tried the Linux f-prot.
Seems to work nicely.
