Another wine post

I've installed wine on my RH9 and i'm not sure on how to configure it, so far without trying to configure it, most programs come up as this when i try to run them..
------------------------------------------
wine /mnt/windows/AP\ Guitar\ Tuner\ 1.02/APGuitarTuner.exe
err:wave:OSS_WaveOutInit /dev/mixer1: No such device
err:wave:OSS_WaveInInit /dev/mixer1: No such device
----------------------------------------------------

What is /dev/mixer1?
How do i get this thing configured?
Thanks for your time.

You just need to load the module for your sound card. Then run sndconfig utility to configure your soundcard. Once this is done, linux will automatically create the files /dev/mixer and /dev/mixer1.

ya, by default its not packaged with Red Hat 9....but you can download it from

ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linu....69-1.i386.rpm

or

http://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/lin....69-1.i386.rpm

Once you download sndconfig, install it and then as root, run it. You will need to configure the IRQ, DMA settings for your soundcard. That will be easier if you have windows installed. Just use the same the settings of windows or search google/LQ for more information.

Finally, the main configuration file for wine is located in

$HOME/.wine/config

Incidentally, I downloaded the newest version of wine after going through a post from one of LQ members....

http://linuxquestions.org/questions/...hreadid=146330

I just installed the rpm and I didnt need to edit the configuration file till now. But yes, depending on what windows software you are trying to run, you will have to edit this configuration file as per the supplied instructions.

FYI, when i installed 'flashget', a popular download manager in windows, it automatically created the fake windows directory. So in all, there was minimum effort on my part during installation and configuration.

You can find a detailed info from the wine manual page......just do a

man wine

Regards,

amit

Ran into some problems. First once i downloaded the rpm for sndconfig, this is what happened, i thought i might have screwed up the rpm process so i tried to install it again:
----------------------------------------------------
rpm -i sndconfig-0.69-1.i386.rpm
package sndconfig-0.69-1 is already installed
[root@cacole desktop]# sndconfig
bash: sndconfig: command not found
-----------------------------------------------------
Not sure what to do ^

Also when I try to config wine even as root this is what i get:
-------------------------------------------------------
root@cacole desktop]# $HOME/.wine/config
bash: /root/.wine/config: Permission denied
-------------------------------------------------------

I'm always getting stuck in places like these for some reason.

1. Try re-installing sndconfig again using the following command

rpm -ivh --force sndconfig-0.69-1.i386.rpm

2. Then run 'sndconfig' again.

3. If still you get the same error message, try the following command

setup

It will display a list..At the bottom of the list you will notice "Sound Card Configuration'. You can configure sound settings with this option too.

NOTE: Do not run wine as root. Wine dosent work with 'root' login.

1. Log-in as a normal user and install the wine rpm file. That will automatically create a .wine sub-directory in your home directory.

2. Now, to edit the wine configuration file, give the command

vi /home/<user>/.wine/config

[ Replace <user> with the actual user-name (and not root!). ]

OR

2. The current release of wine also offers a command called

winecfg

This opens a graphical configuration window, but in my case none of the buttons actually worked. Try and see if it works for you.

Regards,

amit
