An app to plot a certain type of diagram
 

Guys,

I am looking for some software in which I can edit the relationship between two items/objects and the software plots a diagram with the connections between. So far I am using dia, but I have to generate all the design. And if there are a few more connections between two nodes I have to redesign the whole thing.

It would be nice to have a second option to plot areas.

So it's like I am plotting a diagram of the people in a company with all the flows between them. And it would be nice to have them grouped in bands based on departments, it would make things even more clear.

I might look at searches that include "visio linux." They come back with some products/apps both downloadable and online that might suite your needs. Even Openoffice draw might be usable?

One of my LUG members showed a diagram he did of his house and yard, including layers which could be turned off and on, for plumbing, wiring, trees and bushes, and more, which he did in Open Office Draw. I think it might even have been scalable, but it's several weeks since the presentation and I'm not sure.

It was really quite impressive.

I normally use Dia for diagrams, but LO/OOo draw might be an alternative. I haven't had a need that would get me to play with it yet.

I need something TO MAKE ME the diagram. I said I am using dia. But I need something smart enough to make the diagram based on the given relationships. I need an intelligent app, not a dumb drawing app.

What exactly do you mean: do you want to be able input dimensions and equations and have shapes and lines generated?

The link is a couple of years old, but likely still valid, as this is not an area of software that changes rapidly.

I think that you should look at graphviz - it is made for that purpose.

Of course, you would initially need to create the relationships into a document readable by graphviz, but you might be able to automate that and once done, managing it in future and updating the graph would be a snap.

It is not point-and-click, there is a learning curve, but it is the full power of graph theory unleashed! I do not claim to be an expert with it, but I use it regularly and have been able to figure out how to do the things that I need with reasonable effort.

I was beginning to lose all hope. And haven't checked the thread. I was sure to receive some other useless replies. But that seems to fit the bill. I'm going to install it later today. Even if it's not precisely what I am searching for, at least I am far closer in my quest.

Folks here were trying to help you, and give you suggestions. You did not ask what others used, but for suggestions on what TO use...and when people give them to you, you're nasty because we didn't feed you exactly what you wanted. Why don't YOU look up a few things and try them out first, then ask questions like "I tried xxx, but it doesn't do yyy, and that's what I want...any ideas on how to make it work that way, or some other program that DOES do it?"
