Amaya web editor - how do I.........

Find out why it won't start?

I've downloaded and installed it using mandrakes "rpmdrake+", which prompted the install of some dependencies, which it also installed.

If I try and start it from the star(t) menu, it tells me it's starting then stop's. If I try and start it from a terminal, then I get this
Code:
bash-2.05b$ amaya *** Amaya: Irrecoverable error ***
bash-2.05b$
So does anyone know the "how's and where's" of finding out why it won't start please?

regards

John

Always look in ~/.xsession-errors if a graphical
program fails to start.

The next thing is a
ldd `which amaya`
and see whether it complains about some
libraries...

Next a
strace `which amaya`

Cheers,
Tink

Thanks for the reply Tinkster.

The ~/.xsession-errors seems to show this

Code:
*** Amaya: Irrecoverable error ***kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KActionCollection::KActionCollection( QObject *parent, const char *name, KInstance *instance )
Though when I try "ldd which amaya" it just report's thus

Code:
bash-2.05b$ ldd which amaya
which: ldd: ./which: No such file or directory
amaya: ldd: ./amaya: No such file or directory bash-2.05b$
but if I then try the "strace which amaya", it gives me this

Code:
bash-2.05b$ strace which amaya
execve("/usr/bin/which", ["which", "amaya"], [/* 61 vars */]) = 0

There's a little misunderstanding :)

In both cases there are back-ticks around the
which amaya

e.g.
Code:
ldd `which amaya`

Tink

Sorry for the massive post's. There's probably load's of that code that are totally unnecessary, but I wouldn't know which bit's

Hence the "decypher" request.

Many thanks for any assistance.

It seems to be unable to open that file, but I don't know
why it should segfault over that ...

Odd.

The ldd looked normal, my recommendation would be
to remove that amaya package and install from source.

Cheers,
Tink

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to use Amaya? I was compiled it form source a couple of months ago. As a browser it's quite ugly and old. It was nice to be able to type directly into a .html page saved locally but it's also quite limited. It's a bad habit to get into as you don't learn how html works. I found it was more effective to edit the raw code with Gedit, view the results with Firefox and then validate the code with an online validator or a perl script installed locally. Just my tuppence worth..

Well the plan is/was that while I'm learning how to hand code, it would be nice to get something up and running quickly.

Then with the newly aquired knowledge to play with whatever I managed to produce via amaya - the theory being that it's supposed to be standard's compliant, wysiwyg etc.

Unfortunately I've now managed to get the src and start installing that, except I don't really have much of a clue as to what I'm doing with the src package i.e. I've managed (well I think I have) to unpack it.

Because when I do a "whereis amaya" it seems to be /usr/share/amaya, but I'm now at a loss as to what I should be doing next (as you can see from earlier post's, I do try and stick with what I know, but that doesn't always work).

So at the moment, I'm trying to work out how to get rid of it, but I'm also suffering from linux based espresso withdrawl symptom's - though it might have something to do with the stress I get whenever I try anything command line based as well!

regards

John

Unless you're making excess use of style-sheets,
including paper-format and portable fonts there is
no WYSIWYG in HTML.

Yeah, so it seem's.

So all I've got to do now it to work out how to uninstall whatever it was that I managed (sort of) to install!

Any tip's on that would be excellent.

John
