Amanda + SCSI tape autoloader

'lo all.

I'm trying to install amanda on a server to back up a number of windows and linux servers. Whilst the installation of amanda seems to be going alright, I have this problem that's stunting the progress a bit.

The amanda package has the program "amlabel" which labels a tape as an amanda tape. When running it, it rewinds the tape, reads any label that may be on the tape, rewinds the tape again, and then labels it (the last step I'll assume it does!). On the second rewind, the linux server amanda is installed on hangs. I have to hard-reset to recover from it. It doesn't lockup completley though, as I can type a command in, and press enter, but it just wont execute it (ctrl-alt-del doesn't work either). If I try and login from another terminal, I can type the login name, and press enter, but it'll never ask me for my password. The tape autoloader (which is a HP surestore Ultrium tape autoloader) isn't doing anything, nor has it started to do anything before the crash happens.

The amanda server is a plain Redhat 7.3 install btw.
I don't thinks this is a problem with amanda itself, but something is causing a problem when a tape is loaded in the loaders drive already when something is done on the scsi device. If anything is done when there isn't a tape loaded, and the program has to load a tape it runs fine.

Any ideas? I have no idea what to search on in google or anything for this one. The HP site isn't being helpful either.

Cheers

Apologies, have found a solution (I think).
Read the Redhat errat section on 7.3 and theres a kernel update which seems to fix my problem. I upgraded the kernel from 2.4.18-3 to 2.4.18-5 and all seems well.

Sorry to have wasted a post

Right, me again!

The problem persists, although it appears to be an amanda problem I think (can anyone devise a way to figure out if it is or not?).
I'm using a lot of commands manually on the tape and tape changer (mt, mtx, and amanda tape loader file itself) and everything works without crash. I've managed to run an amanda dump correctly, but I used st0 (the rewinding tape) which I'm not supposed to apparentley! Seeing as it worked though, I ignored the warning.
I got a problem though when adding a new tape to the run, using amlabel. It loads the tape, reads it, rewinds it, writes the label, rewinds it (to check the label), and quits asking me if I'm sure st0 is a non-rewinding device (I'm sure it isnt!) The tape isn't labelled, and isn't added to the tapelist. If I do change it to nst0, it crashes hard, and I have to press the reset button. It also creates a hardware fault with the tape loader, meaning I have to power cycle it to get the tape out of the drive back to its slot.

Anyone have any ideas at all?
