Alternatives to x?
 

Ive just completed an LFS system, and Im wondering if anyone knows of an alternative to x? I like having a GUI, but from what I understand, the x system with a window manager of sorts, is not as fast as it could be because of the server-client system that it uses. And also Im wondering about the pros and cons of x.org X11R6.8.2 vs. xfree86-4.4.0, ie: which has strenghts where over the other etc.

As far as i know X is the only windowing Environment Linux has at the moment, as far as which version of X is better i can tell you that the Version i use is Xfree86 and it runs fine for me but how fast it runs depends on which window manager you use (KDE is the one i use and it consumes a lot, due to the eye candy) and how you set it up, there are many of them out there just shop around and find the one that fits your needs. but make functionality and use ability your top concern everything else is just extras.

google for "window managers liux small" and that should find a lot of lightwieght ones.

well I have already decided on icewm as my window manager (Ive spent about a week deciding on a window manager), but Im not sure which X Im going to use. The reason why I asked if there was an alternative to x is because I noticed that X started in 1984! I thought there might be something a bit newer:P

Just this month, Xorg made this release.

X was started a long time ago, but that doesn't mean that it's not still being worked on. It is in fact a testament to its quality. Either that or the complexity of the undertaking was so great that others have not followed in their footsteps.

But either way, last I knew, XFree86 and Xorg are the only options, and most distros now prefer Xorg because of XFree86 licensing issues (also Xorg development is considerably faster).

I wouldn't worry about speed on account of your Xserver, I've seen Linux boxes run CS with zero video lag (he was using xnest window manager I believe). Just my thoughts there.

Pretty darn fast. Try it with elinks as your browser. :cool:

Zippy! You wonder why X?

The only advantage is running lots of x terminals, IMHO.

For my X environent, I like fluxbox running gnome-panel on the top and gkrellm sitting in the slit, with sloppy focus, antialias, no maximixe over slit, and autoraise.

hmmmmm..... I think I may have to look into this ;)
