alternatives for sendmail

i want to install a program, that'd connect to my remote mailbox and copy all the messages that reside there. i've installed and configured fetchmail. this program seems to be what i've been looking for. but when it attempts to transfer messages from my remote POP3, the action stops saying it cannot connect to localhost. i guess it attempts to connect on port 25, that as far as i know is used by SMTP. well i've read a bit about sendmail and so, but it's said that it's hard to configure and in addition it isn't secure at all. what should i install than? somebody's told me that exim is a reasonable choice. is that correct? if not what should i install than?
