Alternative for Shockwave player from Adobe, for linux
 

Hi.
I like to play chess in a site that uses shockwave player, from ADOBE, to run the game. The problem is, there is no version of shockwave for linux, and as far as I know there isn't any alternative GPL/freeware software to fill the gap.

Does anyone know any software I can install, so my Firefox load this shockwave page correctly?

I'm sitting at a Mepis 8 machine which installs Shockwave flash 10.0 r12 by default. Part of the confusion is that flash from Adobe is not always called "shockwave".

What distro are you using, and have you looked in the package manager for "flash"?

Regardless, you can get it from the Adobe site.

Only way I know of is to run it through wine (and FF through wine):

so maybe I'm talking plugin, and everyone else is talking standalone player?

Adobe flash has nothing to do with adobe shockwave. They are different softwares from adobe. You can see both, as different products to download in adobe's main webpage.
I have flash player from adobe installed in my firefox. What I need it shockwave, but it's offered only to windows. I'm using Ubuntu Desktop, latest version.

Hi. Even If i run it with wine, I don't think it will be integrated with my web browsers. So, it wouldn't solve my problem.

Isn't there a GPL alternative for this?

I'm talking plugin, since it's gonna be used in my browser to play chess, but their names are as players... Flash Player, Shockwave player... etc.

Crossover Linux has a version that can be integrated with your existing web browser, but it's awfully old.
The easiest way to do it is to install Firefox for Windows in Wine, and from there download shockwave for windows, so you can run it in the windows browser.
I don't know any way of having that plugin in a native Firefox other than the first one, but I'd be interested how.

My Firefox tools--->addons shows that "Shockwave Flash 10.0 r12" is installed. When I right-click on Flash content, it says that I have Adobe Flash Player 10.

I started some googling and quickly realized it would be a major quest to understand what Shockwave will do that Flash will not. (And why my FF thinks Shockwave is installed.)

Another suggestion for the OP: Find a chess site that works with available tools. I've never needed anything but regular Flash, so I'm not super motivated.....

Yeah, there's a difference between slockwave and flash. Shockwave is quite rare, so most likely all you need is flash player which is available for Linux.
