Alt codes in Openoffice and other applications.

Hello there. I was writing a few sentences in Spanish for a schools project and had to use accent marks quite a bit. I tried to use the Alt+ codes (like ALT-0191 giving you an upside down question mark) but they would not work, so I had to keep going into the Special Character dialog box. So I'm wondering, is there anyway to be able to use ALT codes in Openoffice and in other Linux applications as well? If not, what alternatives are available?
