alsamixer settings won't stick, "alsactl restore" as root after song change

So, I seem to have a problem with alsa.

I've set my channel levels in alsamixer and stored the settings with "alsactl store" as root. But when (in this case) the mp3-file I've been playing ends and the next one starts my channel levels are messed up and everything sounds awful. I have to issue the command "alsactl restore" after every song change. The problem is that two channels (EMU10K1 PCM 3 & EMU10K1 PCM 3) raises itselves to max. By running "alsactl restore" they are set back to about 65%.

any ideas?
