alsamixer problem (trying to record sound)

Hello All,
Iam new to Linux and I installed alsa drivers, lib and utilities for my sound card.
I had to use alsa in one of the C code and it gets compiled and runs properly. so i assume i installed alsa correctly.

now i have want to record sound and i am not sure how do i do it.
i tried running alsamixer but it gives me the following error:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

i have given read/write to dev/dsp and dev/mixer.

iam using alsa-0.9.8 drivers, lib and utils.

any help would be appreciated.

regards,

sanjeev
