ALSA Driver is already running
 

Hello,

First I just want to say this site is the best!

Now to my problem.

I have installed Mandrake 8.0 and the install was great (very friendly). I set it up to load to the KDE GUI my only problem is that I get the error that ALSA Driver version 0.5.10b is already running. This stops me at runlevel 3 I think. If I try to go to runlevel 5 by typing #init 5 I get the same error, ALSA driver is already running.

Any ideas how I can get passed this. I am very exited to get this to work because I have been using RedHat 5.0 for some time and thought I would try a different Distribution and get with the times and get the 2.4 Kernel.

ALSA is a sound card driver, which presumably mandrake convieniently installed for you. I presume you can boot from the installation cd - rescue mode or whatever, and manually remove the alsa entry from /etc/rc.d/rc3.d Mine is called S87alsasound. Actually, you can just start the interactive boot, press i or whatever, and say no to ALSA... then delete it, manually reinstall it or configure it properly if you do need the ALSA drivers for your sound card.

I removed ALSA but when I try ‘init 5’ the screen flashes a few time then I get
‘INIT: switching to runlevel: 3’
‘INIT: sending processes the TERM signal’

Then I am back to runlevel 3 :confused:

Any ideas for this one?

runlevel 3 is your firend! keep it there!

most spods boot up into runlevel 3, but your's seems to try to shut down.... erm..... not sure.

If no one replies in a day or so, re post the question.

Anyways, you can't get into runlevel 5 when your booting, can you get into X at all after your in runlevel 3? Have you tried from here to reconfigure X?

I have tried to reconfigure X with no change. When I am in runlevel 3 do I just type ‘# startx’ or how should I try to get X to start?

yeah... startx will get you into X, if its working properly, though it might do the same thing with runlevel 5, flash and then give you an error... if that occurs... something is wrong with the configuration and needs then to be fixed.

you might want to check out www.xfree86.org for more info on the hardware your using... if its compatible and what not...

Would my problem have anything to do with the fact that I have one video card build in to the mother board and one in a PCI slot?

When I did the install it found both of the video card but I only want to use the one that is in the PCI slot so I do checked the option to only configure the PCI video card.

The one built into the mother board is a SiS 6306
The PCI one is ATI/Rage 128 Pro

I will keep trying for now.

I got this information from MandrakeExpert.com and it worked for me!
Just thought I would post what work so it may help someone else.

At first, you can try and deactivate the internal video controller of the the motherboard, in the BIOS configuration utility.

Then, if it still doesn't work, try and use XFree 3.3.6, which works better on the Xpert series of ATI video cards. Please process as follows:
- start Linux in failsafe mode
- log in as root
- type the command : XFdrake --expert
- choose using XFree 3.3.6, select your screen type and video mode
- reboot
