All menu text disappears after using up2date w/FC1

I am running FC1 on a Compaq Presario 2585 laptop. I first changed my sources file in "/etc/sysconfig/rhn/" to grab updates from faster mirrors by commenting out the existing sources and adding more appropriate ones. I go to the main menu and select "System Tools/Red Hat Network". It grabs all the headers, etc., etc., then I choose all the updates, excluding kernel*. It successfully downloads and installs everything. I reboot. At this point all the menu text in the log in screen disappears. I can't even see the characters of my log in name or password. After logging into Gnome, the same thing occurs...no menu text anywhere, just icons. Text does show up in OO Writer, but no menu text. Is this a result of updating everything? Does it matter if I update XDM, GDM, and XFS? Interestingly, menu text is present in KDE. I would appreciate any thoughts/suggestions. Thanks.
