All KDE apps crash


I freshly installed debian stable/woody this weekend, nothing big
installed yet except for X4.1.0 and a few apps I need.
Next, I installed KDE (I followed the instructions on

But all KDE apps crash immediately. I can only see the app and then the KDE crash report for a split second each (I had to make a well timed screenshot to figure out what it was).
The only error message I get is:

DCOP aborting call from 'anonymous-718' to 'kate'
ERROR: Communication problem with kate, it probably crashed.

Other apps than kate report the same.
The only app that works is 'konsole' with the '-noxim' switch. I'm sorry I can't supply any other debug info, but there simply isn't any.
I've tried both KDE 3.1.3 and 3.1.4 on both 2.4 and 2.2 kernels.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? I haven't found anything in the
