If I use a terminal I can type alacarte at the prompt and the menu comes up allowing me to add buttons but how can I get the button to launch alacarte back?? I am on Ubuntu 6.10

Can't you just add a menu item for alacarte in alacarte?

Hmm, I'm not familiar with that particular distribution but it's usually possible to add menu items by right-clicking "Applications" in the task bar and then selecting "edit menu". Just add the item and submit the command needed to launch that particular application (supposing it's in /usr/bin, you would use the command "/usr/bin/alacarte").

What do you mean that it doesn't have itself as an option? Just type the command in it.
