ok. after struggling with this thing, thinking to myself that I can do it on my own, i finally gave up. here is my problem.
1- I have a ATI AIW rage 128 ultra PCI video card.
2- using SUSE 9.1
3- AMD 2500+ with ASUS KT600 mobo

The PC is used for office apps and as my only TV. Now everything runs fine except for the video card. support for 3d acceleration will render my X super slow and useless, so im guesing support for 3d acceleration is not yet perfected on rage128 chips on PCI interface and thats ok becuase i never use it for games. now the TV tuner function on the other hand is important to me. I installed the gatos ati.2 driver and xawtv. now when i run xawtv i get something about an fatal glx error and the solution for that was to pass the -nogl parameter to xawtv. after that i started to get caption but the lower part of xawtv is just rubbish. after a while the whole X becomes unstable and i get bits and peices of that rubish flashing all over the screen.

Iwent back and installed windows to check and see if the tuner might have been damaged , but it works fine in windows so i know its a software problem.
