AIM Clients
 

Hey all-

I'm currently running a fresh new install of Fedora Core 1, and everything seems to work fine except for my machine's ability to connect to AIM. No matter what piece of software I try (Gaim, Kopete, or the official AIM put out by AOL), they all seem to stall on connect. When I run Gaim in debug mode, I get the following output after I click "sign on:"

At this point, the GUI progress bar says "Screen name sent" and it's stalled at about 25% or so...I'm not firewalled in any way and everything else seems to work perfectly. Can it be some security setting somewhere that prevents my machine from accepting the oscar connection? If so, how can I check this (I'm a linux newbie)? What else could it possibly be?

In case it's necessary, I'm running a P4 2.4 GHz system on an ASUS p4p800-deluxe mobo.

Are you connected via a router? If so, it might be the double-firewall thing doing bad things. Try turning off the Fedora firewall, and see what that does. If you don't know how, hey, don't worry, neither do I :-)

Just reinstall it and select "No Firewall"

If that doesn't work, I don't know what's wrong. I use the official AIM client (installed via RPM) on my RH9 and it has always worked like a charm for me.

Does AIM work on Windows (or your other OS)?

I run RH 9.0 because I refuse to switch to Fedora until when I SAY I don't want KDE it doesn't install it anyway without my permission. Along with about every other package in the distro.

Haha yea, I noticed it did that too for me, I just chose to ignore it ;)

I have my system dual-booted with XP and both AIM and the Gaim windows port work fine, which is why this is so surprising to me. The thing is, I'm not running a firewall (I remember choosing no during installation) and there is no router... its just really weird and I think it doesn't like me, that's why it decided to give me my sound output through my line-in port instead of the normal out port, but that's another story for another time :p

This is actually the only thing keeping me from completely getting rid of Windows, I'd love to figure it out somehow and completely convert... thanks anyway, if anyone else knows anything please post away...

well if i remember coorectly...there are two ways of connecting to AIM through gaim...the servers i mean....check that out.
also a suggestion...try posting this query among the networking threads as the guys out there will probably help u much more.

try unistalling gaim, then reinstalling a fresh copy
i doubt this will work since its happening on gaim and aim
but if u want to
then i guess its worth a try
