I am getting this too..
EDIT:
Here's what I did to fix it.
First, I added "init 3" to the Boot Options line when Grub comes up, this stopped X from starting automatically.
I then edited the XF86Config file and switched driver from "nvidia" to "nv". nv is a free alternative to the commercial nvidia driver, which appears to be the culprit here.
That should get you back up
