Advice for entering Linux field

I have been working in the Telecommunications industry for six years as a CTI (Computer Telephony Integration) developer and, having been recently layed off, I am looking to get into Linux system admin field.

I was a Unix admin for ten years before I got into the telecommunications field and see Linux as a a viable means of taking advantage of the System V Unix experience that I already have.

I'm studying Red Hat's guide to networking and system admin and hope to get certified (RHCE) in a few months.

Does anybody have any advice or suggestions regarding how I'm going about this or any ideas about getting a "foot in the door" so that I can get some experience with this OS?

Employers want people with experience and you get experience through holding a similar job. Your best selling point would be to emphasize that there is a lot of carryover from system V experience into Linux, which there is.

If you want to obtain hands on Linux experience do some charity work like converting a school, church, or library to Linux.
