If I wanted to run say, premier pro 2 and after effects, is it possible to do so in an open gl environment? this is under ubuntu

If I said yes you'd be angry because that might not be true. But if I told you no, you'd soon get I'm lying to you; you can try, but the success is a much more complicated matter. First thing that comes into my mind is 1) set up your graphics card/drivers to get opengl running, and 2) get the programs running - Wine could be a first try to run them. It *could* work, but that's easier said than done (might need some configuring, tweaking, errors, giving up, waiting for updates etc..)

Anyway, try Wine.
