adobe photoshop 7 on wine
 

has anyone here been able to get photoshop 7 running under wine? i'm using the newest build for my mandrake 9.1 (made it with source)

i've got a lot working, like notepad, mirc, wsftp, winzip...

when i try to run the setup.exe for photoshop, i get the splash screen, the getting ready to install box, and then a blank black box titled E:\_ISTMP5.DIR\_INS5576._MP
(E:\ is my /tmp folder, the above path exits and i think it is a place where a bunch of pre-install stuff is placed)

i get an error about X, i'll get the actual wording in the terminal window if it is needed

any ideas?

photoshop 7 doesn't work with wine yet...you can maybe try getting crossover office 2.0 if you want, but the only versions of photoshop that work with wine are 5.5 and some have gotten 6 to work.

oh and just to note, photoshop runs without a hitch in crossover office :D

ah, ok, that's why the pic at winehq doesn't look like ps7

guess i'll have to find someone with a lesser version...

it's my first month on slackware linux and i managed to make photoshop 7 running under linux with wine. since the only alternative was a program that i discovered this morning, unfortunatly it's not free. and i am so poor :[ so I tried a little harder with the wine configs, since photoshop 7 runs on crossover and crossover is based on wine, i just took the wine config file of my crossover trial installation ( /home/you/.cxoffice/) and tweak it and copy it to my wine config dir (/home/.wine/), you'll have to install photoshop using crossover, then copy the registry file to you wine config dir too (.reg files in the same dir of the config file), photoshop is starting well, even if it have some strange behaviors for some actions, but everything seems to works well. I think that the main problems that make wine fail to run photoshop is due to some dll handling related to the msi install, anyway, it works fine now, exept for that error;

err:module:BUILTIN32_LoadLibraryExA loaded .so but dll user.exe still not found - 16-bit dll or version conflict.

note: some features wont run under wine, the biggest deception at this time is the save for the web option, wich is a bless for webmasters. if you have problem with sticky photoshop tool windows, try TAB, wich is a nice temporary solution.

i've tryed both wine and crossover office 2.0 (wich is based upon wine), and i can say that for about 50$ crossover is a fair deal (if you ever configured wine, you might think like me :p ), in fact crossover is more like a user friendly skin with plugins for wine, and 50$ worth the job of those coder because they did a great job, the install & configuration is painless (unlike wine), i mean really painless, sh install-crossover.sh and your done.

now, you all windoze slaves can stand up and burn all your w****** cd!
if disney did it, you can.

actually PS7 now works with the regular version of wine, it was added not all that long ago....

14 days after i originally said it didn't work :D

I am using the latest version of wine:

Then I try to run the Adboe Installer:

obviously your sound server is not configured, by default (in your case) wine try the wineoss.drv, if you are using kde true winearts. And, you wont bother yourself with crossover office, but you will if you do it with wine, like i said, crossover is just a front-end like application to wine, use your imagination.

check this section in your wine config file

debugging tips:

refer mainly to the firsts lines of the errors output, others are inherent of the main cause of the problem.

most of these error can be solved in the main config file

even when your wine will be running well it will still trow lots of errors, this is normal

if you get an unrecoverable hardware error causing apps to shutdown after loading, check if all the headers of your installed truetype fonts are correct so the afm file is
well builded, supress all fonts with unknown headers with generate errors in afm files witch crash apps under wine (i had hard times with this one :p if it can help someone.. eheh)

Hey I was just reading along trying to learn more about linux, I am also running mandrake.... I was woundering if someone could direct me to some information about running windows files in linux...... it would help me out alot .... thanx

Is there some reason you have to have Adobe Photo Shop when GIMP is free and works better? I even stopped using Adobe on my Win 2000 machine in favor of GIMP. Open Office.org 1.1 also works better than M$ Office and will export PDFs in Linux or Windows.

May I ask you a couple of questions?

How long have you used Photoshop, and what version do you currently have?

What version of The GIMP are you running, that you assume is better than Photoshop, and how and/or why would you say it's better?

What experience in graphic arts or photo editing do you have to base your GIMP works better than Photoshop statement upon?

I'm not trying to start anything here, but let me tell you this. I've used Windoze for about 12 years, and I am sick of it! I am migrating to a Linux distro, and learning. One of my main desires in life at the moment is to format c:/q the entire demonic Micro$loth mess out of all my computers!

I build and repair computers, and soon hope to refuse to build another Windoze system, only Linux systems. I grew up in the printing industry, and have used Photoshop since version 3 (which GIMP was built from) and now currently use PS7. I've been learning The GIMP for a little while now, but IMO it falls far short of PS7, for the graphics professional. For someone just wanting to "print a jpeg photo" it will probably do okay, though it still doesn't seem to have the printing capabilities of PS7. And the tool and menu structure isn't laid out the same. For example, where in The GIMP would you find extract?

I would like nothing better than to find that The GIMP is a replacement for PS7. When I can find suitable replacements for Photoshop, PageMaker, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver to work in a Linux distro, my Windoze days are over. But the apps just aren't there, yet. I've tried Scribus to replace PageMaker, which doesn't even come close. Scribus looks more like one of those Micro$loth Office programs that attempt DTP.

Please supply me with some facts, and not just emotion, to help me migrate.

Im running Mandrake 9.2 Ive tried both Wine (latest and older) and Crossoffice 2 and have got Photoshop 7 to run in both. Just uncommented the line Windows ="win98" in wine config, crossoffice 2 installation went fine with default config.

When I installed PS7 on Wine 20031212 (didnt work on latest release) I first got it all to work, even Save for web. But now it wont work. Havent done any config changes in Wine since it worked. It just stopped. Ive reinstalled PS7 too but no improvement.Everything else in PS works now, but not Save for web. Anyone have a clue about this ?

In Both Wine and Crossoffice 2.0 photoshop is real slow and unreliable but I guess I have to live with that (using 1,2ghz pentium, 256mb ram, Geforce 2). DrOzz, you said it runs fine, how did you do that, or did you just meant it starts ? :)

Would be glad to hear about what you have to say about this !
Ill get back if I get any it to work again.
