How does the official acrobat reader compare to ghostview?

leadazide 03-15-2005 01:00 PM

AFAIK you can read the new PDFs (aka Ebooks) only with official Acrobat reader 6.0+ (and 7.0)

reddazz 03-15-2005 02:04 PM

I am sure kpdf can read the new ebooks as well. Apparently they implemented DRM, which didn't go down well with other KDE devs, but there is an option to disable this at compilation. Anyway I don't think Adobes new reader is that bad.

No need for adobe for linux.

Why do you say this?

Some people prefer it to other PDF viewers. Personally I hope many people download it, maybe, they'll start seeing Linux as a viable platform and port some of their products such as photoshop to Linux.

I just downloaded and installed Adobe Reader 7 and works awsome on FC3. Hope they port their other products to Linux as well.

Ignore my original post. I didn't extract the archive properly with Konqueror, but command line did the trick.

I get the following message, however, on acroread startup:
Quote:

There was an error while loading the plug-in 'PPKLite.api'. The plug-in failed to initialize.
How can I find this plugin, or disable it from loading?

R00ts 03-15-2005 04:35 PM

I had some problems with gpdf on my last Debian install, so I tried out acroread. It was horrible. None of the keyboard shortcuts worked so it was really annoying. The user interface was ugly and obtuse. And god forbid if I ever tried to use the "select text" tool. Everytime I did, my entire system froze and I had to do a hard reset!

Hopefully Adobe has addressed these issues in this version, but I don't think I'll be trying out acroread again until I start hearing people rave about how great it is. :tisk:

apachedude 03-15-2005 04:57 PM

To disable a plugin, you can delete it from the plug_ins directory, or you can move it to another. This is somewhat of a hack, so I don't know if this is the best way.

R00ts, when I started using Linux, acroread was ugly and seemed bloated. However, there came a time when my professor had me print some pages for reading, which he scanned from books. Hundreds of pages. KPDF, Ghostview, and whatever else I tried kept butchering it. Wrong orientation. Scaled incorrectly. Shifted to one side and cut off. Finally I tried acroread, and it did the print job perfectly. I'm sold on acroread now.

benjithegreat98 03-16-2005 09:03 AM

I downloaded this and used it and it displayed a pdf much better than any of the other products. There was a dark picture that they wouldn't display very well and you couldn't see what was going on. When I used acrobat it displayed it just how it was supposed to be.

Micro420 03-16-2005 12:32 PM

Also when I use Acroread, the images are more sharper and scaled correctly than when I use Ghostview. I am going to try this new version. Afterall, PDF's were invented by Adobe so I figure they know best how to manage their format. *sarcasm* Kind of like cars and the US - we invented cars and we're the best at it!

I have the same problem as you had.
have you solve it??
when I delete the file PPKLite.api, it shows another error about the plugin.
if you solve it, can you email me at sleetdrop@hotmail.com about the method.
thanks a lot.

All I did was move PPKLite.api to another folder. Which should be equivalent to deleting it. No idea why it doesn't work for you.
