it depends. How do you boot into KDE or gnome? When you start linux do you pop up to a graphical selection of what desktop you want or do you get a terminal? Since you said add it to the screen im guessing you boot into a graphical login screen. In that case you probably need to mess with GDM / XDM config files......I did mine in a real un-traditional way, so hopefully someone else will post how to do it.
