add lvm to expand a full filesystem

Hello I am using debian
I have the root (/) partition full. I have freed space disk somewhere else but it's not contiguous

I decided that the best option is LVM. I have released espace somewhere else in the harddrive and using cfdisk i have formatted it to partition type 8e linux LVM
now how do I configure the system to use that partition formatted in linux LVM so that i can have its space available for the root partition.. can I convert the root partition to lvm without losing any data.
i have already recompiled the kernel and added support for lvm under device drivers.
thank you very much.
Mario

As I understand it, you can't. LVM has to be there before the file system is created (and the structure of the physical and logical volumes is created). And for / you have to do that during install.

Can't you borrow a disk, move your data over and re-design the layout of your own disk?
