add a click-able map to a web page

Hi,

I am trying to build a web site that will have lots of statistical information.
For a start I need to have a click-able map for the US, that would show these statistics in a pop up balloons, and then if a state is clicked, would lead to a specific page for each state with more statistics.

I wonder how can one have something similar the map in this web page:
http://boostup.org/en/facts/statistics

Well, since I have not done any web development before I would appreciate some info about how to do this, and the tools I need to do it.
I plan to use Linux (what else, it's been my OS of choice for many years now) for such a project.

Thanks in advance,

faizlo

You might start by looking at image maps: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_map.asp
