Activant's Prophet 21, Unix=?Linux=?AIX

My father runs a lawn and garden distribution company. For various tasks, he uses Activant's Prophet 21 software on Windows XP, with a central computer running AIX. I'm not entirely sure on the details of the system.

However, he has grown tired of having to pay for licences for new Windows versions. On my sugggestion, he has considered switching the Windows computers over to Linux. I checked Activant's website, and it doesn't mention Linux capabilities.

But I saw something about Unix, and I was wondering what kind of campatability there is between Unix, Linux, and AIX. In other words, could the Unix software run on Linux? I figure that since it can run on AIX (though I don't know if there is a separate version for AIX), it should be able to run on any Unix-based system.

As far as Wine is concerned, I have tried to get it working on the laptop that we have with Ubuntu on it, with no real success. I would prefer to elimintate the step of using Wine if possible, given the low capabilities of the computers.

Thanks for your help!

Linux is Unix based but that does not mean that every application that will run on UNIX can run on Linux as well. Linux is working hard to be as standard compliant as possible but it is not perfect yet.

You could also go straight for UNIX: FreeBSD and (open)Solaris are pure UNIX and both are free as well.

I just noticed your post. If you are running the AIX version you require two types of licenses. AIX and Progress. The latter is the costly one. Not sure how Windows plays in as you are only running a terminal emutator, correct?

Depends if you can get the src or only the binaries. They (binaries) tend to have portability issues, even between eg AIX & Solaris.
