accessing emacs menu when in console

i have a feeling this is a no brainer but haven't found an answer anywhere and can't figure it out..... how do i access emacs' menu when running in console? in particular i'd like to enable syntax highlighting and close a buffer (not just open another on top of it) which i haven't found keyboard shortcuts for (and honestly would rather do from a menu)

But really, Ctrl-x k for closing the buffer ("killing" it)
and Alt-x font-lock-mode (with TAB-expansion) are
probably faster, and not THAT hard to remember,
either ;)

Tink
