How to do that is explained in chapter 7 of the manual for Virtualbox.

Personally, when I want to do this I set the network adaptor version in VirtualBox to "Bridged" which means that the XP machine gets its IP address from my router rather than VirtualBox, then it can be accessed just like any other Windows machine attached to the router.
Bear in mind though that this means your virtual machine will be on your LAN just like any other so if it is compromised in any way a virus or trojan could spread to other Windows machines on your LAN, depending on their configuration.

It seems TobiSGD and I both think you are trying to do different things.
Please clarify whether you want to be able to connect to the XP guest with remote desktop or attach to file shares on it. If you wish to connect to it with remote desktop you can see how to do this in the instructions TobiSGD posted a link to.
