access a samba share from windowsXP

Hi,

several people seem to have trouble accessing a samba share (security=user) from XP. Im supporting sambafilesservers with different samba-versions, and it happens always the same:
1. Any older Windows-version from Win98 to Win2K works fine.
2. When I try to mount a samba share from xp, on several xp stations with different patches and servicepacks I have to wait a long time, about 10 minutes, and then suddenly the share appears. I found out that XP first tries a connect to port 80 to the fileserver. Running apache on the file server (oh dear), the logfile tolds us that XP seems to use WEBDAV (www.webdav.org). After a timeout (10min), XP uses smb and mounts the share like W2K and NT. Does anybody know how to tell XP to use smb at once? I searched several newsgroups and, excuse me, the ms-knowledge base, but any registry settings I tried didnt work.

Thanks a lot,
Sigi

Setting up samba as the primary master and also a wins server should help. OS level 85 should do it over any nt machine.

Also dhcp.conf should probably include these options

option broadcast-address 192.168.0.255;
option routers 192.168.0.1;
option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.1;
option domain-name "mydomain";
option netbios-name-servers 192.168.0.1;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;

if you are still having problems, I can check it out further when I get home and boot up my XP machine and check tcp properties.

post the output of

ipconfig /all

Hi,
after lots of network analysing, I know whats happenig: Windows XP, and only XP, is using the internet settings from the control panel first when you try to access a samba-server. Because we have a Proxy, first XP tried to reach the fileserver through the proxy, and 5 minutes later directly. In the proxy settings any sambaserver has to be defined as local host which should be reached directly.
