about free linux soft


hi there all,

can any one please tell me ... from where i can able to download free software for linux i am using fedora7.... like for dvd play...powerdvd..i am actually new at linux...

Most of the common things will be available using your package manager. If not, then simply do a Google search. For example, "powerdvd linux" gives lots of relevant hits.
Anything that is not in you package manager should come with some kind of installation instructions. If not, then come back here and tell us what kind of file it is.

You will have to add a third party repo to play most dvds. VLC,mplayer are two of the best. Livna is generally considered to be the "standard" F7 third party repo.

about rar files

thanks for reply i can use that advice....i am having another problem with rar files... i search google and found a site address ->

as i am using fedora7 i did this following

# yum install unrar

some installation completed than a line say " nothing to do " ....

i guess installation i complete....than i use " urar x file.rar "but nothing happend..

i use man unrar says "No manual entry for unrar"

i dont know what to do....i am still searching....

If "but nothing happend.." means that bash didn't spit the dummy
and said "bash: unrar: command not found" it most likely means
that it did what you said.

the rar files problem solved...i used this two sites instructions to install on fedora7...now it is working well....

PowerDVD is not free. PowerDVD for Linux was developed, and was included in a few distributions at one time, but was never made available as a separate package. You're better off looking for an alternative DVD player.

I wouldn;t recomend MPlayer for DVDs, as it's DVD support is rather limited. VLC is good for DVDs, and Xine-based players are usually acceptable.
