Abit KT7a-Raid Highpoint controller

Guys

I've been trying to locate all the threads on this topic, but to post in all might be considered padding my post count!

I started building a new system in December (I think, it feels like longer), and couldn't install RH7.2 at all. RH 7 installed, but gave sig11 errors if I put the cpu to its proper settings.

Bought new PSU, fiddled memory etc.

Still didn't work.

Today I went to
www.highpoint-tech.com
and
http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kt7/kt7faq.htm downloads page.

Got updated BIOS and the v1.3 drivers, and the thing works perfectly.

Weird, I have the exact same board, 1 previous BIOS, purchased around last January, and I've run it on every even numbered kernel since 2.4.5 without a single problem.

Weird.

We'll end up with the same hardware if we're not careful!
Anyway I have to retract some of my happiness, system works fine... with 512Mb ram, segfault city when I try to use 2 sticks. I'm not sure why that is, but I shall investigate further. At present, i'm happily d/l ing ximian desktop. If evolution is as good as they say, and star office 6 works?bye bye windoze on laptop.

Aight Doc, if your laptop is a P3 IBM Stinkpad (and I mean that with all the love for my laptop), then I'm worried.

I've never had that many hardware issues with my rig... yeah, 2 sticks of Micron PC133 for 512 total. Weirder. The only real difference is I've got the Athy 1.2 T-bird. You also probably have a better vid card as I was running out of cash by the time I got to picking it up and had to settle for an ATI 128. Thank goodness Slack came out with an Xfree in 4.x land, as the 3s didn't support ATI worth a dink. Strange.... does the rest match: 6x4x12 CDRW, 16x DVD, 40Gb HD/2.8Gb HD, POS Yamaha Sound card, Linksys NIC, Initio SCSI?

Now if that's all the same... I'm looking for Rod Serling in my closet.

Cheers man,

Finegan

LT is a generic celly 433.

I think the problem with my athlon is that I'm doing root-raid on a striped array of 2 20G seagates, which it looks like you're not. The rest of it is not too similar, 16x10x40 cdrw 16xdvd netgear fa311 (autodetected by the install AND works properly!) soundblaster pci card (not in, as worried it was causing instability). Vid is an elsa erazor agp, but i've got a gladiac 511 twinview PCI that I'm planning to use.

Stuck the PCI vid card in, booted OK. Set all IRQ's manually, booted OK. Stuck in the second stick of ram. Seeems to work. Maybe it was just an IRQ conflict with the RAID controller.
Just got to come to terms with RH7.2 now.

The plot thickens.

Looks like it was an AMD bug, which I have neatly sidestepped by using RH7.2 with athlon optimised install.

Whew... I must have missed that one by compiling everything optimized for the athlon family... hmm. I read the Reg every day too, wonder how I missed that one?

Thanks again doc,

still no joy on the Sparc. *grumble* *grumble*

Cheers,
