ABBYY Fine Reader 6.0 Sprint

I'm trying to figure out how I could have downloaded ABBYY Fine Reader 6.0 Sprint, and not sure how to use it. Could it be connected with my download for my LogiTech QuickCam, or to my Dell All In One Printer?? I don't know what it's used for except that I know it's for OCR functions. I keep getting an Error Message that says: "File Corrupt...Reinstall ABBYY Fine Reader." I honestly don't recall downloading it, and Dell techs tell me it wasn't downloaded into my original Windows XP system. Can anyone shed some light on this problem. Thanks for your help.

Not a linux question, but I can shed some light...

This is software for your multifunction printer-scanner. OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition, and is used to scan a typed document so your computer can "guess" what the letters are and try to reproduce the text into a word-processing program, like Word. I have had variable success with this, as one recipe called for a cup of chopped barn to be stirred in a large howl. It was supposed to be ham, and bowl. My advice is, get the original disc that came with your printer, or failing that, go to the website for the company that makes your printer, and download that program. Of course, install it. I don't know how often you'll use it, and I actually think you'd get more stability from using linux and forgetting about all that proprietary windows software and paying for it just to have it break down and stoop working, or refuse to work once your "license" has run out. Get a linux disc, available for nothing or next to nothing from linuxcd.org, your local bookstore in the magazine section, or even downloading for free. I personally use ubuntu linux, available at ubuntu.org. In fact, they can give you free cds, no shipping costs. shipit.ubuntu.com. My two cents. Hope you get it sorted out, and next time, don't try asking non-linux questions on a linux forum. It doesn't usually go smoothly. Some of us have opinions about windows, as you'll see. -Bill

Comes bundled with EPSON scanner

Hi,

I got it as part of the driver software install from EPSON for one of their scanners. I don't know whether it's being bundled with other vendor's drivers as well.

It is bundled with many scanners

I have seen it bundled with compaq, and others. It is not really crucial, if you're not scanning text with the intention of avoiding retyping it, so if you needed, you could just uninstall it totally. Start>All Programs>Control Panel. Add/Remove Programs. That should get rid of the annoying message. Otherwise, reinstall it from a disk or download. Hope that helps. -b
