a small, fast and basic text editor for X

does anyone know one that fits into any of these categories ?

no KDE or Gnome please :)

xedit is not good - has memory leaks everywhere and is very buggy
I am using it at the moment temporarily until I get a good one.

vi, emacs and mc (midnight commander).

theYinYeti 12-13-2004 07:39 AM

I like nedit and vi (gvim).

monohouse 12-13-2004 09:20 AM

I found nedit but I can't find gvim :(
alittle help ?

The guy is looking for a light-xwindow-editor. None of those fit the the description. C'mon, cut the guy a break.

monohouse, check out these: gxedit or nedit
maybe, cooledit, but it requires python...

PS.
gedit and kedit are multitudes nicer. For a very light editor in Gnu/Linux, text-based have always been more user friendly than x-based(unfortunately).

MC works fine in X. Actually it is really easy to use. Also you can use it in a command line enviroment. You can do all the stuff that you can do in a gui text editor. I prefer it to kedit, nedit, xedit, etc... VI is not that bad if you are just editing a file. Emacs I do not really care for, but some love it that is why I put it in there.

I really think that the guy should check put MC. It is included in all distros (I think).

I use NANO in Slack and BSD. Great thingy

MC is a file manager, not a text editor, in fact MC is a SUCKING file manager because some of the keys don't work right (page up for instance)

I assume you refer to the internal text editor, well we have vi for that, no need for a file manager to do what it is not supposed to do.......
but vi is a text mode editor, it's good, but that's not what this topic is about........

Sepero, well, thanks
let's see then...........

nedit requires LessTif, I would much rather it not to require anything, which means the less are the requirements the better..........
as you already know that cooledit requires python, that's more of less equal in requirements to nedit.........
what about gxedit ?

gedit and kedit are not good for me - I am NOT a gnome OR KDE dude........
I use fluxbox.........

I need a light X text editor I would not ask you all this if I had gnome or kde..........for obvious reasons.......
I will check out gxedit in the meanwhile........

however in case it doesn't check out, I would like to ask you what you would prefer of the two in question........

nedit or cooledit ?

I've got nedit a precompiled binary, because I could not compile it with LessTif, I much rather use a compile-able program

so the bottom line for now is : nedit or cooledit, which also implies Python or LessTif ?

as for emacs (and x emacs) - I don't think you can define that a light editor..........

and I (still) don't know where gvim is .........

oh and about nano..............it's "Modified: Aug 3, 2003"
so I prefer an up-to-date editor that is being maintained....
but in case it is good, and if you recommend it over the alternatives, I would check it out

monohouse 12-13-2004 10:54 AM

I can't find the source for gxedit :(

tangle 12-13-2004 11:45 AM

MC comes with a text editor, the command to invoke it is mcedit.

SlackerLX 12-13-2004 11:47 AM

Agree on that with Tangle. Also use it frequently:cool:

Sepero 12-13-2004 11:48 AM

Speaking of limited space, I use Debian on my Zaurus. My editor there is nano-tiny. I think it's like under 100k :)

Nano really is a nice(text-based) editor, my only quibble with it is that it always wants to put a blank line at the end of my files. (strange)

Here's some links for gxedit:

Thulemanden 12-13-2004 11:56 AM

While nedit is neat, how can anything compete with the developed gxedit?

What in Pluto's name do you want the source code for?

monohouse 12-13-2004 04:50 PM

I am aware of all these mentioned above 3 links, but this is not good for me, where is the source ?

mcedit and nano are console editors ?

in which case it leaves us with cooledit, nedit and gxedit

gxedit - where is the source ?
nedit - the source would not compile, requires LessTif
cooledit - requires Python

and one last thing .......why do you need nano and mcedit if you have vi ?

found it : ftp://ftp2.sco.com/pub/skunkware/uw7...it-1.23.tar.gz

lol ? looks like gxedit is highly outdated : 1998 ?!
it doesn't compile :(

lol cooledit is too serious, I don't need an IDE........
only a text editor :)

and Python seems to be alote bigger than LessTif............
so I think I will go with nedit or gxedit..........

I have finished comparing gxedit with nedit since they both are non-compilable.......

it appears that nedit was 1.5 MB behind, since gxedit is smaller it's chosen......for now
nedit was about 5 MB and gxedit is around 3 MB, which is obviously a very important factor, and more importantly, gxedit does not require anything except gtk, which I already use and have it loaded alote of time anyways, so it's either shared memory and gtk or exclusive memory with lesstif.............

thank you all for your help !
I've found the best text editor (for now), unfortunately it is unmaintained.........
but you don't need that if the program is finished and bug or memory leak free.........

nedit maybe maintained, but it's too big (5MB) in memory, so I am going with the smaller one........maybe if nedit was compilable I may have recosidered, but it is not, so.......thanks ! let me know what you think, or maybe you have new options that were not yet written here...........
