A question and a problem regarding X.org

I have a couple of issues but first some background -
I wasn't sure where exactly to post this but since it kind of covers 3 distros and software I thought this was the best place.
I have been running Debian Sid from a Kanotix hard drive install and I have just used ubuntu hoary repositories to upgrade my KDE to 3.4 and also to install X.org.
I upgraded KDE first which went very smoothly with no errors and after a reboot everything seemed to be working perfectly.
I then installed X.org and again it went very smoothly with no errors apart from one problem -
I have always had the dpi set at 75 but now it is more like 100 in kde (after the kde upgrade it was still 75, this only happened after installing X.org). I have tried allsorts to correct this but it just won't happen. Can anyone tell me the correct procedure to fix this?
In Gnome the dpi is still set at 75 as normal, the problem is only with kde.

Well that's my problem and now for the question -
Can anyone tell me the best way to run the shadows with xcompmgr at startup?
I've tried putting it in .kde/autostart in my home directory but it seems to start very slowly this way and also makes things like superkaramba or gdesklets takequite a long time to start after.

Incidently, I must say I'm suprised at how well the shadows and transparency are working, from what I've read I was expecting it to be very sluggish and slow but I would say it is quicker and smoother than than windowFX on Windows XP and my comp isn't exactly state of the art either.

I have searched through file after file and every one that I can find that has any reference to the dpi and changed them to 75 as well as adding -dpi 75 to the end of anything that starts up x.
After this, the problem was corrected. However, after upgrading gdm I accidently set gdm as default and after changing back to kdm the problem returned.
Having gone back through any files I altered before they are all still set to 75.
Here are some things I have noted -
If I run kdm then kde runs at 100-ish dpi but both xfce4.2 and gnome run at 75
If I run gdm then all 3 run at 75 with no problems.
The obvious answer would be to run gdm all the time but I really don't like it and want to run kdm.

After doing some more upgrades, the dpi in kde has gone back to normal. I don't know what did it and the actual kdm login bit is still at about 100 but after making the fonts smaller just for the login it looks ok now.
