A Question about Gimp
 

Hi all,
Let me first admit that I am not a Gimp expert..I have used Paint shop pro(PSP) in the other operating system(You know which one)..
What I like to do is to copy relevent questions and answers from forums like this and others,edit by removing unwanted parts and printing it to put in my notebook thus preserving the instructions, charts and pictures etc..
The one feature I miss the most is to copy something from the klipper(clip board) into Gimp for editing similar to PSP..Like I explained above to copy data/pictures of a web page and past it into Gimp..I have looked and looked but was unable to find a way..
I know that it can be done in two steps such as taking a snapshot of the window then importing the file but sometimes the source is larger than the open window..Also I found that Open Office word processor will do it but it has few editing properties
that gimp would have especially for charts and pictures..
I hope I explained what I want to do clearly...If anyone knows how do it or to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated..

It sounds like you are trying to use GIMP to edit text---that makes no sense. For pictures, you can cut and paste into GIMP. From a web page, you would normally save the image to a file, then open that file in GIMP.

You can also save the entire web page and then open it in OpenOffice.

I do not know if this is what you are looking for but there is a program called "K snapshot" that operates about the same as "capture" in psp.

I guess I am not clear..
Yes I know how to edit text in Open office and it does work fine for that but recently I wanted to capture a large chart in the Mozilla window But I wanted to cut out portions of that chart I did not need or want..Open office allowed me to paste the entire chart into the writer directly from the klipper but I could only resize the entire image and reposition it not edit(cropping out portions)of it..Maybe open office can do that I will have to study that more too..

If I used ksnapshot to capture the window, I found that the chart was too large and I could not see the complete chart
after I copied it..

I guess that seems to be the delima whereas PSP would paste
anything that was in the clipboard as a PSP image that I could clip out portions and finally print..
Gimp will do the same if it is a file only ie: .jpg .tff but not directly from the klipper..My hope was that Gimp would do it like PSP and I just was not familiar as how to do it.
I am now looking at the Gimp user manual and so far not found anything to that end..

If you have something rather large in your Clipboard, and try to open up a New gimp image, in my experience it automatically sizes the new image to the dimensions of whatever picture you have in your Clipboard. For example, if I take a screen shot, and then try to open a new file, it will ask me the dimensions of my project, the defaults given as 1280x800 (my desktop resolution).

From there you can paste into the blank canvas and edit away. Save the file when you're done, and then import it into your OO.o document as you see fit.

You can use a program like ksnapshot. You can create a snapshot of a region you drag out with a cursor. Then copy it to the clip board. From there you can paste it in gimp.

Thanks for your responses..I do use ksnapshot but what if the image is larger than your open window? I have not found ksnapshot can drag a copy larger than the open window itself...
That is the primary problem..It is a large chart/graph that
ksnapshot cannot handle..That I why i thought Gimp could paste the entire contents...
BTW my default resolution is 1024x768..Yes I know it is better to use higher but these old eyes have trouble with tiny icons..Plus I do use the ctrl_+/- to regulate the resolution as far as it will go to compensate..(Edit)Let me be specific..The following link contains a Ubuntu cheat sheet that I wanted to print after i cut out parts to make the print on a 8.5x11 sheet of paper readable to me.http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=707737

First off I am wondering if you are able to do the snapshot thing in the other OS if your drawing is larger than your screen.

But you already indicated that taking a snapshot is the way you want to go. You could of course zoom out the image. If not in Mozilla, you can in Opera.

The particular picture you are referring to in the Ubuntu forum can be saved as PNG. No snapshot needed at all. Most of the images on a web site can be saved.

As a last resort, you could make multiple snapshots and stitch them together again in Gimp.

Boy do I feel dumb!!! I did not know you could save it besides using ksnapshot..I saved it to my desktop but had to rename it *.png to let Gimp see it..
