A good open source virtual machine?

hi i was wondering if there is a good open source vm that i would be able to use to test out new kernels. Having trouble with a new kernel i compiled and the keyboard not working and have a few more ideas to try but restarting everytime is a pain. I've been spoiled with linux's great uptimes. lol.
