A good ICQ/multiclient Messenger

I was wondering if there is a good multiclient messenger?

found a copy of gnomeicu that works in suse 8.2 (i tried the gnet + gnomeicu-0.99 package RPM and it wouldn't install properly)

---------------------------------------------------
> rpm -i --replacepkgs gnomeicu-0.99-5.i386.rpm
var/tmp/rpm-tmp.31361: line 1: gconftool-2: command not found
var/tmp/rpm-tmp.31361: line 3: gconftool-2: command not found
execution of gnomeicu-0.99-5 script failed, exit status 127
---------------------------------------------------

-_- i tried getting the gzipped tarball and ./configure it - it complained about my libxml-2.0 is not >= 2.4.7 (i was wondering if the latest suse had that already but they dont -_-)

--------------------------------
...
checking for perl... /usr/bin/perl
checking for pkg-config... no
*** The pkg-config script could not be found. Make sure it is
*** in your path, or set the PKG_CONFIG environment variable
*** to the full path to pkg-config.
*** Or see http://www.freedesktop.org/software/pkgconfig to get pkg-config.
configure: error: Library requirements (libglade-2.0 >= 2.0.0
libgnomeui-2.0 >= 2.0.0
gnet >= 1.1.4
libxml-2.0 >= 2.4.7) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.
--------------------------------

i am now trying the CVS version - hoping that it would work - but i doubt it again

is there any other client that can run ICQ and/or AIM/YIM/MSN nicely? (with server list streaming?)

thanks in advance :)

http://gaim.sf.net

those errors you have there are pretty fundamental though. you should definitely have pkg-config on your system now, and gconftool if you use gnome.

kazuni 05-25-2003 05:25 PM

i already did install pkg-config and after i ./configure, make, make install it still gives me the error -_-

gaim? doens't it only support AIM and ICQ? and it doesn't load the online list -_- (well, the one i have in suse doesn't -_-)

MasterC 05-25-2003 05:51 PM

There are gaim plugins for the other Messengers such as MSN, Yahoo..

Cool

kazuni 05-25-2003 08:05 PM

ah Cool, thanks MasterC :)

yowwww 05-25-2003 08:18 PM

gaim was a real pain to install in suse, hope you have better luck than most people do.
it is worth it once it is done though, gaim is the best.

kazuni 05-25-2003 08:19 PM

i have it already working :D jsut that i donno where to get the plugins -_-;

yowwww 05-25-2003 08:22 PM

what version of gaim - 0.63? and what deps did you have to get and did you use the source or rpms?

also, what plugins are you looking for? the ciq, yahoo, msn, jabber, irc and many others should already be there, you just have to load them from the main window at the bottom

kazuni 05-26-2003 07:05 AM

ah thanks, i found them.

but is there anyway i can import my contact list of my ICQ to Gaim? because it doesn't seem to stream the online list automatically -_-

mhearn 05-26-2003 07:32 AM

Huh, you should already have Gaim installed as part of Red Hat 9.

Now run along to apt.freshrpms.net and get that setup, then you can update Gaim whenever they do a new release (about every 2-3 weeks currently)_

kazuni 05-26-2003 07:36 AM

thanks mike, i'll do that (btw i saw an apt-get and a cvs - which one is better?)

i got gnomeicu working now, installed an old version, but i will still give gaim a try

mhearn 05-26-2003 07:50 AM

From ICQ:

07:49 < TD> hi, do you know when the icq plugin will pull in the contact list from the server?
07:49 < TD> i'm asking on behalf of somebody else who wants to use gaim but doesn't want to re-enter their contact list from scratch....
07:49 < Robot101> the AIM/ICQ plugin downloads the contact list
07:49 < TD> hmm
07:49 < Robot101> provided your previous client stored it. Trillian doesn't, afaik.
07:49 < TD> odd. i wonder why this person thinks it doesn't....
07:49 < TD> ahhh
07:50 < Robot101> Trillian is the cause of more "Gaim bugs" than any other IM client. it really is a piece of shit.
07:50 < Robot101> --> lunch

So now you know.

mhearn 05-26-2003 08:12 AM

Um, that should read "From IRC" of course

Pcghost 06-05-2003 02:43 PM

Forget Gaim.

Ayttm (formerly Everybuddy) rules. No plug-ins and it works with AOL,MSN,ICQ,Yahoo, etc etc.

kazuni 06-05-2003 03:01 PM

actually, gaim doesn't use the plugin interface to load individual protocol anymore, which makes it "natively supports AOL/ICQ/MSN/YIM/gabber/irc/napster/etcc....

actually trillian does stream from the network (contact list) so that you don't have to update everytime. it worked for me using version 1.0d +
