A Few Apache Questions

Apache is definitely running on this server, however there is now apache directory in /etc/ there is instead /Apache2/

Is that normal? If not, where can I find the command that launches apache on startup and tells it to get its config files from /etc/apache2/ instead of /etc/apache/

Once I figure that out, I also need to find out how to enable user webpages (i.e. if I go to <server>/~username/ and get a user web page).

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, it's normal if you're running apache2, instead of apache. The startup file will (probably), be in /etc/init.d. You don't say anything about your setup or configuration, so it's hard to give you specific answers. There is probably an apache2 file somewhere under /etc, which is the startup script.

The config files are in /etc/apache2. Modify it to suit your needs, so you can pull up 'user webpages' from that server.

Thanks I think I just figured out how to do this.

How would I restart the apache daemon (if I need to) once I have changed the settings.

This is Suse btw.

Ok, I tried restarting:

/etc/init.d/apache2 restart

...after editing the mod_userdir.conf file. The page's won't serve from the home directory though. I get:

Code:
Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /~cs751001/index.html on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request
The public_html directory is set with rwxr-xr-x and the index.html file has rw-r--r-- permissions so that shouldn't be the problem. Also the main webpage works fine.

Ok, I used this webpage:

http://www.astahost.com/info.php/apa...bin_t3698.html

...to get it working and it does indeed work. I have just one question left:

What is up with those permissions? you set the public_html directory to 733? Why would you give groups and all users write and execute privileges (but not read privileges) on the public_html directory?

EDIT:

Well I changed the permissions to 755 and it still works which is fine for me.
