A command to make the screen go blank.

Hi:

Is there a Linux command to blank the screen, making it all black, whether the screen is in text mode or in graphical mode? For instance, if the command turns off the video output from the video card, then it wouldn't matter what mode the screen is in: the result should be a black physical screen. Thanks.

You might be able to use vbetool to do this, ie:
Code:
sudo vbetool dpms off
Because vbetool does this through BIOS calls directly, it should work whether you are running X or not.

Of course, from a X screen, you can use xset:
Code:
xset dpms force off
