64 bit vs. 32 bit libs and rpm

Hello,

Running RHE WS 3.2 on a 64 bit AMD. It's a 64 bit OS (ooh!)

User needs Lahey fortran compiler. I go to install it, I need /usr/lib/crt1.o a 32 bit lib as a prereq. I have /usr/lib64/crt1.o a 64 bit lib. I go thru the madness of installing glibc-devel-i386, which contains the 32 bit lib, without overriding or any funny business. Lahey compiler installs fine. Time passes, some other 64 bit packages are installed, user goes to use lahey and it squacks about the /usr/lib/crt1.o lib missing. I look, sure enough it's gone.

So here's my question:

Do you guys know if a possibility exists that rpm would remove the 32bit /usr/lib version since it was installing a 64bit /usr/lib64 version?

BTW, I have HP linux support and have been on the phone with them for an hour trying to just reach the right team!!!!!!! Maybe instead of it being HP it should HA...

tia,

henry
