3D Graphics software for illustrating Figures

Hi:

I am helping my Prof write a book on Computational Geometry. It involves the use of lot of figures. The book is typeset in LaTeX. I need a 3D Graphics software for illustrating figures. I noticed PGF/Tikz packages in LaTeX which have a very steep learning curve. I am using XFig currently. It is a neat little program, but lacks 3D capability. Is there a commericial version of the package that does 3D graphics for illustrating figures. We can purchase it, still better would be ones free for Linux.
