3D design/CAD packages

Can anyone recommend a good 3D CAD package please. Something along the lines of SolidWorks, ProDesktop or 3D studio. This is to run on Ubuntu.

Thanks

CAD packeage for Linux

www_LinuxCAD_com (note the dots) available since 1996, LinuxCAD has 2D and 3D. Very similar to AutoCAD for Unix and DOS somewhat around AutoCAD version 10.

2D/3D Cad

Hi

Qcad works well for basic stuff and is free. I have used VariCad demo and it is as nice as AutoCad but it cost about 700.00 US so it depends on what you need/want to do?

If money was not an issue I would use VariCad.

$700.00 is still a bargain compared to the price of AutoCAD :)

Funnily enough I did actually search the forums first. I am familiar with QCAD, though not used it much yet, but QCAD will only produce 2D objects. However I am looking for a package that will work with and generate three dimensional objects rather than two dimensional drawings. Specifically to output .stl files to 3D printers and enable FANUC code to be created for use in CNC milling machines.

Linux CAD

Plug in Linux CAD into your favorite search engine and you will find a lot of linux CAD apps, some 3D modeling app's, even some animation app's. Some of the stuff is really cool but be prepared for a long steep learning curve.

Good luck, Michael

Thankyou

Thanks for your input, several good leads there.

But what I should have done was check to see if the package I use, ProDesktop, will run under WINE. It does! Installs and runs with no serious problems. But I will still be trying out some of those others.

mmm msad luck there,

I use Solidworks & Inventor myself and none of the linux apps compare ;-( hence me still using Windows.
Its a shame really, hopefully one day and engineering app that works well will be written.
Something like 3D studio, is Blender.

Stuck until then i guess.
