3D apps setting my gamma to 0.1

Hi. I'm having a bit of a strange problem which I never experienced before on this same system, even though I've reinstalled all of this stuff on it numerous times in the past. The problem is that when I run a 3D app, for example glxgears, my gamma is set down to 0.1 I can't figure out why.

My video card is a Radeon 9600XT and so I'm using the fglrx drivers with XFree86.

If this is the result of some strange configuration option I've missed somewhere, I'm wondering why I've never had the problem before...

Confused.
