2.6 kernel broke rpm

after successfully upgrading to the 2.6 kernel on my rh9 box, i was unable to install anything via rpm (in the term or otherwise). i get the following error:

rpmdb: unable to join the environment
error: db4 error(11) from dbenv->open: Resource temporarily unavailable
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Resource temporarily unavailable (11)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

is there an easy way to fix this? i love 2.6. it literally doubled the speed of this box. i would boot into 2.4 just to install rpms then boot into 2.6 (2.6 is worth it), but it seems to me that there might be an easier way.

peace.
