[via vt82c686] sound makes clicking noises

I did have problems getting it going, but now that I can get audio, it's making clicking noises. first off the background...

I tried looking at ALSA Documentation and that's where I got the dxs_support stuff. It's also mentioned at this EPIA HOWTO as well. I have tried using numbers from 2 - 4 and none of them seem to work. here's how I actually do the change in case I'm not doing it right

Code:
modprobe -r snd-via82xx
vi /etc/modprobe.conf (make the changes)
modprove snd-via82xx
/etc/rc.d/./rc.alsa (to load the volumes back)
mpg321 some_sond.mp3
All the volume levels are around 68% or so, which is about the same volume that the tuner is when playing radio stations or cd's. I also tried running mpg321 in 48k mode and that didn't fix it either. It seemed like everyone had luck with that dxs_support stuff, too. any ideas?

I may have a temporary fix. I went through all the instructions on this site restarted, and it still clicked. so I then remembered someone trying mpg321 -o oss songname.mp3 and that seems to work. although shouldn't this work with the alsa output though?
