I'm running Slackware 12 and trying to get X working on an ATI Radeon Mobility M7 card. It worked fine under Slackware 10 so I'm not sure what's going on here.

I ran xorgsetup and let it do its thing but startx just results in a black screen. It *looks* like it's trying to initialize something but nothing ever happens. I can't find the specifications for my monitor so I picked the most conservative settings I could in xorgconfig. Still nothing.

Problem occurs regardless of window manager-- xfce, kde, fluxbox. Nothing works. Tried launching "startx -- -depth 16" but it still didn't work.

I checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log but there are no error messages of any sort, though I'm sure there are logs I don't know where to find.

Is there something simple I'm overlooking, like a log file? I can't find anything pertaining to X beyond that one.

The section about installing ATI drivers would have been helpful if I had a net connection on the laptop :\

I went ahead and gave Slackware 12.2 a whirl and it works just as well as 10.0 (right out of the box), so I'm not sure why 12.0 sucks on my laptop.

Problem solved though :P
