Zimbra server is dead - but i need the emails

Hi,

This is an absolute emergency - so i apologise for that, in addition to being a newbie-ish.

As the title says - my Zimbra server (on ubuntu 6) is dead. How it died? I did it - stoopid.

I forgot the terminal user for my ubuntu server, i followed the steps of pressing esc at boot, editing the line with kernel on it with rw init=/bin/bash - loading into there and doing a passwd user password.

At that point i read to 'reboot' which it didnt do - so i did a shutdown -s now that said it couldnt do it so i did a ctrl+alt+del.

On reboot it came up will all sorts of errors - the worst that scares me is 'segementation fault' when a file is attemped to be written amd alot of services at boot 'cant find file or folder'.

Either way - it takes AGES to boot to login screen but i can still get there, so far.

What i need to know is how to get the raw data off the disk? I tried to add a usb drive and copy everything to it. However when i try to make a folder 'USB' in mnt it gives me segmentation fault again. If i try to mount the usb drive on an existing folder and copy files to it it dies on folder creation with segmentation fault.

Now i am really stressed - ofcourse i didnt have a valid (recent)backup so i need to get the files off - some how.

Can ANYONE please help me? I was thinkning of trying to add the drive to a Win Xp as a secondary drive and potentially gaining file access that way. Since i dont have alot of experience with ubuntu or linux i dont want to try the same procedure on another linux box unless some one can guide me.

Please please help

Thank you!

Can you boot up a CD distro - knoppix or something? a Ubuntu CD?

If you can, boot it up, mount the zimbra partition and copy across the network
