xend not running after reboot

service xend status returns nothing - simply moves to next line
service xend start does the same thing

Code:
xm list
ERROR Internal error: Could not obtain handle on privileged command interface (2 = No such file or directory)
Error: Unable to connect to xend: No such file or directory. Is xend running?
Code:
ps -ef | grep xen | grep -v grep
root 7703 7702 0 10:36 ? 00:00:00 /bin/bash /usr/scripts/monitor-xen-refresh-testvm1
bit of a newbie here - let me know if you need more info

Hi Geo,
Did you select the Xen kernel from your bootloader at startup?
