This is the first time I have setup an xforward to a Windows machine using xming. If I enter a remote command like /usr/bin/firefox in the SSH section of the putty configuration an xforwards firefox will start on windows.
If I simply have x forwarding enable attempt firefox &. I get the display not found error.
Error: cannot open display: localhost:0.0
I have tried to set the display the IP address of my Windows machine and this does not work.
I have always had issues with Xming and Cygwin-X. Sometimes, it worked sometimes it didn't.
Then I download X-Manager, and I am sticking to it for last 4 years. It is very stable and no need to use putty, use its built in tool, XShell.
Startup Xming first, then open up your PuTTy session and it should work, you may want to check the 'X forwarding' option in PuTTy but other than that no config work needed.
try as rhbegin said, this should always work as long as you don't use sudo to change your active remote user. There are ways to make that work as well but I don't have a HowTo at hand right now. Try google (as always )
You might want to enable compression in putty settings as well.
