Got a Ubuntu server running WordPress.
When i want to install a new theme, or do a WordPress upgrade. WordPress wants log in credentials.
So i made a special user account for this, but it fails anyway. I already installed FTP on my machine.
Also, i am not sure why WordPress needs local ftp access for downloading something from the outside world. I am suspecting that i am thinking in a fundamentally wrong direction on this issue.
Distribution: Debian for server, CrunchBang for everything that's not a server

I'm not sure of the solution to your problem, but I can tell you that WordPress does need access to FTP to upload the theme files to your server.
What is the failure message shown after you input your FTP credentials? How are you formatting them? Maybe someone here will spot something I can't tell from only a description. Good luck!
First off, it's not really local FTP access--it's your WordPress installation having rights to access remote FTP sites to download files. Some of the functions that WordPress has on a hosting service, such as one-click updates, may not be available when you self-host without additional configuration.
Alternatively, since you have shell access to the server, you could download the theme and plugin updates to your home directory and copy them into place in your wordpress directory.

That is indeed possible. But I also will host some wordpress sites for some friends of mine in the near future. So i would like to know what this "additional configuration" is. I tried to search but I do not seem to be able to find one.
I am not sure that that link will answer your question, but I do know that the best place to go with WordPress questions is http://codex.wordpress.org/. If you want to continue looking, that's where I would recommend you start.
